Right now I'm waiting outside of Cooper's room while they put in a PIC (peripherally inserted central catheter) line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripherally_inserted_central_catheter). Waiting is hard. More on the PIC line in a minute.
The kidney ultrasound showed a very inflamed left kidney, due to an infection that likely traveled up from the bladder. As of this morning, they identified the exact organism, so they are now able to use antibiotics that specifically kill the little nasties rather than the general antibiotics they've been using. Because the poor kidney is so "mad" as the doctor puts it, we may be here a total of 10-14 days rather than 7 days. Kind of depends on how Cooper's doing and the consensus of the doctors on the efficacy of IV vs. oral antibiotics. Of course we want to do what will ensure Cooper's long term health, but we're also anxious to all sleep under the same roof at night!
I had a kidney infection in high school, and it was without a double the worst pain I've ever been in (including 4 surgeries in my life). I just hate that he's in pain :(
Back to the PIC line....because of our extended stay and number of days taking IVs, they needed a more "permanent" temporary solution, as the nurse said. The PIC line will stay in longer and be more stable.
The doctors, nurses, and other staff have been amazing. So professional, yet caring. We feel like Cooper is in good hands.
Tuesday will be the next test--to verify that the bladder/kidney system are working correctly. At that time they'll also do a urine sample to see if the infection has cleared.
Cooper will also start some acid reflux medicine to hopefully help lessen the spitups he's been having, esp at night. Poor thing--makes him very crabby.
On a brighter note, Cooper has been spotted sucking his thumb--that's what all the cool kids do!
All in all, things are going well, just anxious for our little guy to be better....
